I run an AI consultancy in Dublin, and “what does it cost” is the second question every owner asks me, straight after “what will it actually save me”. Most consultancies avoid answering it on their websites. This guide answers it with the figures other consultancies have put in writing, then explains what we charge and why part of it is free.
Every figure below is attributed to the page it came from. Prices move, so treat the ranges as the market in September 2026, not a quote.

How much does an AI consultant charge per hour?
Independent AI consultants charge USD 150 to 350 per hour in the US market; boutique and enterprise firms charge USD 250 to 500 or more.
The clearest published breakdown comes from AI Essentials, which puts junior consultants with one to three years of experience at USD 150 to 200 per hour, mid-level at USD 200 to 275 and senior consultants at USD 275 to 350. Palavir gives a slightly wider USD 150 to 400 for independents and small firms, and USD 300 to 600 or more for large firms.
Layer3 splits it by type of provider rather than seniority: freelance AI consultants at USD 75 to 150 per hour, boutique agencies at USD 125 to 250, enterprise firms at USD 250 to 500 and offshore teams at USD 25 to 75. Dan Cumberland Labs lands in the same place, with mid-level consultants at USD 150 to 300 per hour and senior or specialised consultants at USD 300 to 500 or more.
For an owner-managed business, hourly is usually the worst way to buy this work. The risk of a slow build sits entirely with you, and you cannot tell in advance whether a workflow will take twenty hours or eighty. Most of the consultancies above, and we are the same, quote a fixed price for a defined workflow instead.
How much does an AI readiness audit cost?
A paid AI readiness audit costs USD 2,000 to 10,000 in the US market and roughly EUR 750 to 2,500 in Ireland, though several consultancies offer a free version.
Palavir prices an AI readiness assessment at USD 2,000 to 10,000, and its own AI Opportunity Audit at USD 2,500 for one workflow or USD 5,000 for a multi-workflow operation. Layer3 calls the same thing a discovery engagement and prices it at USD 2,000 to 5,000, starting at USD 3,500 for its own. At the heavier end, Dan Cumberland Labs lists assessment phases at USD 7,000 to 35,000, which reflects larger organisations rather than a 20-person business.
In Ireland, Tús AI in Kinsale prices its AI Opportunity Audit from EUR 750 to 1,500, Hibernia AI prices its assessment at EUR 999, and Clear Gate Systems in Cork prices its assessment from EUR 2,500, credited in full against its build programme if you proceed within 60 days.

One working AI workflow, such as lead follow-up or invoice chasing, costs about USD 5,000 to 30,000 in the US and EUR 2,500 to 10,000 in Ireland.
Palavir puts a single automation project at USD 5,000 to 30,000 and says a typical first engagement lands at USD 5,000 to 15,000. AI Essentials gives USD 5,000 to 25,000 for a flat-fee project, with basic automation at USD 5,000 to 8,000, workflow optimisation at USD 8,000 to 15,000 and custom AI implementation at USD 15,000 to 25,000; it says most small businesses land at USD 10,000 to 15,000.
Layer3 is the most useful source on why the range is so wide. It prices an MVP workflow automation at USD 5,000 to 25,000, but splits that into USD 5,000 to 8,000 when the build connects two modern SaaS tools and USD 15,000 to 25,000 when it has to integrate with a legacy system through its API. The workflow is the same; the plumbing is not.
In Ireland, Tús AI prices an AI Quick Win Build from EUR 2,500 and a custom business tool from EUR 6,000, and Hibernia AI prices implementation projects at EUR 1,000 to 10,000 or more.
Budget for running costs on top of the build. AI Essentials lists software licences at USD 50 to 300 a month and API usage at USD 100 to 500 a month as the costs owners most often forget to ask about.
What does an AI consulting retainer cost?
Light advisory retainers run USD 1,500 to 5,000 a month in the US and EUR 750 to 2,500 a month in Ireland; fractional AI leadership costs considerably more.
Palavir prices an ongoing advisory retainer at USD 1,500 to 5,000 a month. AI Essentials gives USD 2,000 to 8,000 a month, tiered from a starter retainer at USD 2,000 to 3,500 up to a premium retainer at USD 5,500 to 8,000. Layer3 starts its entry retainer at USD 2,500 to 4,000 a month.
Dan Cumberland Labs prices essential advisory at USD 2,000 to 5,000 a month for five to ten hours, and a fractional AI officer at USD 5,000 to 15,000 a month, which it compares against USD 300,000 to 1 million or more for a full-time chief AI officer. In Ireland, Tús AI offers AI Ops Support from EUR 750 a month and Hibernia AI offers ongoing support from EUR 1,500 a month.
For a business of 5 to 50 staff, the retainer worth paying for is the one that keeps a built workflow running: monitoring, fixes when a connected tool changes, and small improvements. An open-ended “AI strategy” retainer with no built system underneath it is the one to be wary of.
What drives the price up or down?
Price follows the number of systems touched, the state of your data, how much custom build is needed, and who carries the delivery risk.
Systems touched. The Layer3 split between a USD 5,000 to 8,000 SaaS-to-SaaS build and a USD 15,000 to 25,000 legacy integration is the single biggest price driver. A workflow that reads from your CRM and writes to your email tool is cheap; one that has to talk to a ten-year-old accounts package is not.
State of your data. At Shamrock Electrical, the electrical wholesaler I own in Rathcoole, the schema and FAQ work that got the business cited by ChatGPT within 72 hours went quickly because the product data was already clean and structured in Shopify. A business whose product information lives in someone’s head pays for the clean-up before it pays for any AI.
Custom build versus configuration. Configuring an existing tool, such as setting up an AI receptionist on a platform built for it, costs a fraction of writing something bespoke. Palavir prices a custom AI tool build at USD 10,000 to 75,000 against USD 5,000 to 30,000 for a single automation project.
Who carries the risk. Hourly billing puts the risk on you. A fixed price for a defined outcome puts it on the consultant, and you should expect to pay a little more for that certainty. Digital Bridge in Wexford summarises its own model as “fixed scope, fixed price, owned outright”, which is the shape to look for.
How much does AI consulting cost in Ireland?
Irish consultancies that publish prices charge EUR 750 to 1,500 for a basic audit, EUR 2,500 to 10,000 for one workflow and EUR 750 to 2,500 monthly for support.
The published Irish price points are Tús AI (audit from EUR 750 to 1,500, quick win build from EUR 2,500, custom tool from EUR 6,000, support from EUR 750 a month), Hibernia AI (assessment EUR 999, implementation EUR 1,000 to 10,000 or more, support from EUR 1,500 a month) and Clear Gate Systems (assessment from EUR 2,500, credited against a later build). Most other Irish consultancies, including Artellis, Éirím Technology and Radium, lead with a free call or review and quote after it.
Two public supports change the arithmetic for Irish businesses. The Local Enterprise Office’s Digital for Business support gives businesses with between 1 and 50 paid employees, trading for at least six months, expert consultancy on analysing their existing digital systems and guidance on implementing new ones. The Grow Digital Voucher then funds 50% of eligible costs up to EUR 5,000 for businesses that completed a Digital for Business project within the previous two years, and its eligible list includes analytics software “including AI systems”, training and IT configuration. You must apply before spending anything.

What does Clever Merchants charge?

Why there is no single implementation figure. Is an AI consultant worth it for a small business?
Worth it when one workflow costs you a day or more a week and the consultant prices the build against that saving; otherwise start with free tools.
The test I use is the one Artellis in Dublin states on its own page: it works with businesses where “one workflow eats a day or more a week”. If nobody in your business loses a day a week to one repeatable job, such as chasing invoices, answering the same enquiries, typing up quotes or re-keying data between systems, a consultant has little to build and you are better off with the free tier of a general assistant.
If someone does, the arithmetic is simple and you can do it before you talk to anyone. Take the hours per week the job consumes, multiply by what that person costs you per hour fully loaded, and multiply by 48 weeks. Put that number next to the build quote and the running costs. Three questions to ask any consultant before paying: what exactly will exist in my business when you are finished, what does it connect to, and what happens when it breaks. A good answer to all three is worth more than a low hourly rate.
