About Clever Merchants

Built by someone who needed it to work, not just sell.

Clever Merchants is a generative engine optimisation agency. Before we offered the methodology to clients, we validated it on a real business with real revenue. This is the background.

Founder — Clever Merchants & Shamrock Electrical

ger@clevermerchants.com

I am the founder of Clever Merchants and the owner of Shamrock Electrical, an Irish electrical wholesaler based in Rathcoole, Dublin. Shamrock has been trading for over a decade, selling LED lighting, electric radiators, outdoor lights, bathroom mirrors, and electrical accessories to homeowners and trade buyers across Ireland.

In 2024, I started noticing that buyers were asking AI tools — ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google Gemini — which electrical suppliers to use, which radiators to buy, where to get outdoor lights in Dublin. Shamrock was not appearing in those answers despite having a working website, reasonable Google SEO, and years of organic traffic. Competitors were.

I spent several months working out what AI tools actually needed to cite a business with confidence. Not the theory — the specific implementable actions that moved the needle. Schema markup, question-answering content, consistent entity data, Google Business Profile signals, citation footprint. I implemented all of it on Shamrock and tracked what happened.

Seventy-two hours after the schema and FAQ content went live, ChatGPT cited Shamrock Electrical by name for buyer queries in its category. The phrase it used: "Shamrock is the obvious one." That was not an ad, a paid placement, or a review campaign. It was the result of structured data and content that AI tools could read, verify, and cite with confidence.

Clever Merchants exists to apply that same methodology to other businesses. The method is documented, repeatable, and has been refined through live implementation on a real business. I am not selling a theory.

Experience and background

Ecommerce

10+ years running a real ecommerce store

Shamrock Electrical has been trading online for over a decade on Shopify. Product catalogue management, SEO, paid traffic, conversion optimisation — done in a real business with real margin pressure, not a test environment.

GEO Validation

Validated on a live business before selling it

The Clever Merchants methodology was implemented on Shamrock Electrical in production before Clever Merchants launched as a consultancy. The citations are real, named, and reproducible. That is the only kind of proof that counts.

Technical Implementation

Hands-on schema and structured data work

Organization, LocalBusiness, Product, FAQPage, Service, Article, and BreadcrumbList schema deployed across Shopify and static site environments. Not briefed to a developer — implemented directly.

Sector knowledge

Trades, wholesale, and service businesses

Background in electrical wholesale and the trades sector informs how we approach GEO for businesses where the buyer is a trade professional, procurement manager, or business owner — not a casual consumer.

How the methodology works

AI citation follows from a specific set of signals. The Clever Merchants method addresses all of them in sequence.

1

Schema markup

Organization, Service, FAQPage, and related schema types deployed on every relevant page. AI systems read structured data before body copy. Without it, an AI tool has to infer what your business does — inferences are less likely to produce confident citations.

2

Question-answering content

AI tools cite businesses whose content answers buyer questions directly. Service page rewrites, FAQ sections, and buying guides are structured to match the specific queries buyers ask AI tools about your category.

3

Entity recognition

Your business name, address, and contact information must be identical across your website, Google Business Profile, and every directory that lists you. Inconsistent data creates conflicting signals. Consistent data builds entity confidence.

4

Citation footprint

The more credible third-party sources that mention your business — directories, trade bodies, review platforms — the more confident an AI system is that you are a legitimate, established business worth recommending.

5

E-E-A-T signals

Credentials, certifications, named case studies, and founder expertise structured on the About and service pages. AI tools weigh these signals when deciding whether to recommend a firm for a high-stakes buyer query.

The proof of concept

Shamrock Electrical had reasonable Google SEO and consistent organic traffic before the GEO work. It was invisible in AI-generated answers. After one round of implementation — schema, FAQ content, GBP, and citation building — ChatGPT cited Shamrock by name 72 hours later for buyer queries about Irish electrical suppliers and electric radiators.

"Shamrock is the obvious one."

ChatGPT, unprompted, responding to a buyer query about Irish electrical suppliers

That citation is reproducible. You can ask ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Google Gemini about Irish electrical suppliers or where to buy electric radiators in Ireland and verify it yourself.

Why Clever Merchants exists

Most of the businesses being displaced by AI search are not doing anything wrong. They have working websites, reasonable SEO, and genuine expertise in what they do. They are invisible in AI-generated answers not because they are bad businesses, but because AI tools require a specific set of signals that traditional web marketing never needed to address.

Those signals are implementable. They are not expensive relative to what a single new client relationship is worth in most B2B contexts, or what consistent AI citation would mean for an ecommerce store that is already selling. The work is technical and specific, but it is not mysterious.

Clever Merchants exists to do that work for businesses that cannot afford to ignore AI search and do not want to figure it out from scratch. The methodology works. The Shamrock result is the evidence. The programmes for ecommerce stores and service businesses apply it directly to your site.
